Sanjay Rajaratnam, P.C. has been appointed as 31st Attorey General of Sri Lanka after his name was unanimously apporved by the Parliamentary Council. He has been serving the Attorney General’s Department for the last 34 years, having joined the Attorney General’s Department in April, 1988.
He went onto hold the post of Senior State Counsel, Deputy Solicitor General, Additional Solicitor General, Senior Additional Solicitor General, until his appointment as Acting Solicitor General in October, 2019. Prior to that he served as the Head of The Corporation Division from 2004 , up to 2019. He is currently the head of the Civil Division of the Attorney General’s Department.
He’s a Solicitor of England and Wales and also holds a Master of Laws (Merit) from the Queen Mary University of London. He was conferred silk in November 2014. He has had wide experience in the civil and criminal branches of the law and is regularly appearing in the Superior Courts.
He has appeared in several notable and high profile cases and has held consultancy in several government institutions such as The Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and was a member of the Cabinet appointed Committee of Officials, examining Bills prior to being presented in Parliament. He is also a member of the Law Commission of Sri Lanka and the Council of Legal Education.
He was educated at St. Peter’s College and Royal College, Colombo.
